The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team seized the Orange Empire Conference title and took home third place at the California Community College Athletic Association’s Southern California Regional Championships Saturday.
Wonder Woman was no match for the beast mode that was unleashed by these Lady Pirates with their 388 regular season goals, having scored as many as 26 goals in a single game, and final 26-5 record. The team added another two wins, one loss and 10 goals to their final record following their performance at the SoCal Championships.
The Pirates won two out of three games at the regional championship Veteran’s Day weekend, including an 8-4 victory over Mt. San Antonio College and a 4-3 win over Golden West College to earn the team third place.
OCC’s state championship hopes were dashed by season-long rivals Riverside City College in a 9-6 loss. The OEC rivals played six games against each other throughout the season with alternating wins, leaving Riverside with four wins and OCC with two.
The women’s water polo team was led by 12-year veteran coach Anthony Iocopetti. As the coach of men’s swim, women’s swim and women’s water polo, Iocopetti has coached the Pirates to a combined 18 OEC titles.
