OCC Sports Recap

In a busy week of play, Orange Coast College athletics went 9-7 between six different programs. The Pirates’ water polo programs, both coached by Dan Matulis, won six of their eight matches last week.

Men’s Water Polo

OCC swept their competition across four games this week, beginning with an authoritative 23-2 win at Fullerton on Oct. 20. Pirates utility player Ethan Igloi led the team with five goals in the win.

On Oct. 23, the Pirates defeated Ventura, Palomar and Grossmont Colleges to improve their overall record to 14-4.

OCC will travel to Golden West College for a conference game on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Women’s Water Polo

The Pirates lost a tough match against Fullerton College on Oct. 20, 11-6.

OCC then split the games on their Friday slate, defeating L.A. Valley College 16-5, but falling to Long Beach College 10-8 on Oct. 22. OCC utility player Kendall Chrisman scored five goals and made two assists in the two matches combined.

The Pirates capped off the week with a 11-10 win against Santa Barbara City College on Oct. 23. It was Christman making the difference, nailing a go-ahead goal with eight seconds left in the contest.

Women’s water polo (16-3, 3-1) plays at conference-rival Golden West College Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

OCC fell to conference-rival Santa Ana College at home Oct. 19, with a score of 5-0 in full time. 

The Pirates had better luck on the road, holding out against Santiago Canyon College 1-0 on Oct. 22. The clean sheet earned OCC (5-7-2, 1-5-1) its first conference win of the year.

Men’s soccer will resume conference play at Fullerton College on Friday at 3 p.m.

Women’s Soccer

The Pirates had a tough week of conference play, finding themselves on the losing end of two separate 1-0 shutouts, coming up short against Santa Ana College Oct. 19 and Santiago Canyon Oct. 22.

The OCC women’s soccer team (5-7-1, 0-5) will look to bounce back at home against Saddleback College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball

OCC went 2-0 in conference play last week, defeating Fullerton College in four sets on Oct. 20, and Santa Ana College in three sets on Oct. 22.

Pirates freshman libero Emily Payne played solid defense last week, collecting 56 digs between OCC’s two games this week.

The Pirates (15-2, 8-2) will play at Santiago Canyon Wednesday at 6 p.m.


OCC lost a shootout against Glendale College, 50-42 on Oct. 23. 

Pirates wide receiver Aaron Fletcher reeled in two touchdowns to go along with his 95 receiving yards.

OCC (1-6, 0-3) will look to get back in the win column against Santa Ana College Saturday at 1 p.m.
