OCC Sports Recap

Orange Coast College football won back-to-back games for the first time since 2015, while other fall programs wrapped up their 2021 seasons last weekend. 

Football (3-6, 2-3)

The Pirates staged a comeback win in Culver City, defeating West L.A. City College 20-17 on Nov. 13. 

Quarterback J.D. Rafkin threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 37 more yards on the ground on five attempts. Six different OCC runners accumulated 126 rushing yards as well in the winning effort.

 

The Pirates will play at Santa Barbara City College on Friday for their season finale.

Women’s Soccer (9-10-3, 4-8-2)

The Pirates played a two-game series against their conference rival Golden West College last week, and concluded their season on Nov. 12 against Santa Ana College.

On Nov. 8, OCC tied GWC 2-2 at home, after two second-period goals that evened the score before the end of regulation. Freshman forward Eden Makaafi nailed an unassisted goal in the 86th minute to spoil the Rusters’ chance at a conference win. More coverage of OCC’s draw can be read here.

The Pirates one-upped GWC the next day, with Makaafi pulling off more late heroics to give OCC the win. In the 89th minute, the freshman forward broke the 1-1 tie with a cheeky goal over the keeper, securing a win for the visiting Pirates. OCC closed out their season with emphasis at home against SAC, defeating the Dons 7-1. Capping off a stellar week of play, Makaafi led the team with four goals in the season finale.

Men’s Soccer (6-9-4, 2-7-3)

On Nov. 9, forward Connor Wright scored in the 86th minute of OCC’s matchup against GWC, earning the Pirates an upset victory over the Rustlers.

The men’s soccer program finished the season with an away game against Santa Ana, where the Pirates lost 3-1.

Women’s Water Polo (19-6, 4-2)

OCC placed fourth in the Southern California Regional Championships last weekend, after back-to-back losses on Nov. 13.

Playing in an Orange Empire Conference Finals rematch against Fullerton College, the Pirates once again fell short against the Hornets 8-5, then lost 11-8 to Southwestern College in the third place game.

Men’s Water Polo (16-8, 4-2)

OCC was eliminated in the first round of the Southern California Regional Championships last weekend, coming up short against Cuesta College 8-7 on Nov. 12.

Women’s Volleyball (18-5, 11-4)

The Pirates split their games last week, defeating GWC in four sets on Nov. 10, but falling to Cypress in three sets on Nov. 12. 

OCC will finish their season against conference rival Saddleback College on the road Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Men’s Basketball (2-3)

The Pirates participated in the Knights Invitational Tournament last week, but were defeated in both of their games.

On Nov. 12, OCC suffered a tough 97-66 loss to San Diego City College. The next day, Southwestern College outscored the Pirates 75-64.

OCC will travel to Cuyamaca College on Friday for a 5 p.m. tip-off against the Coyotes.
