Dear Editor:

Last semester, I was fortunate enough to take a golf class led by John Altobelli. I didn’t know him until I took his class. My heart almost stopped when I heard that the coach, his wife and his daughter were on Kobe Bryant’s helicopter which crashed on Sunday, January 26.

Mr. Altobelli was a very kind, good-natured and caring coach who treated everyone like family. I learned the values of hard work and perseverance from him. Mr. Altobelli was kind to give me extra golf balls when I was struggling so I could practice more and he made sure my golf stance was nothing but the best. I wasn’t entirely great at golf, but he gave everyone tips to get better, which I will always remember. From now on, every time I play golf or baseball, watch those sports or visit Orange Coast College, I’ll always think of him.

Mr. Altobelli, thank you for teaching golf and baseball, bringing championships to OCC, paving the way for many athletes and alumni to follow, and inspiring many Pirates. You may be gone, but your legacy is never over.

May you, Keri and Alyssa rest in peace.

— Peter Yencso, OCC student
