Campus battery reported

A suspect was identified in a campus battery incident Tuesday. Anyone with information should call Campus Safety or the Costa Mesa Police Department.

A female Orange Coast College student walking southbound toward the Math, Business and Computer Center was reportedly grabbed by her backpack by an unknown male suspect on Tuesday around 6 p.m.

According to Chief of Campus Safety Jim Rudy, the student was walking on the access road in the Adams Avenue Parking Lot when she noticed a man walking closely behind her. The subject was unsuccessful in getting the backpack.

“She walked to MBCC after and noticed he had followed her. That’s when she left and went to the Library where she then called Campus Safety,” Rudy said.

The victim was not injured and the suspect hasn’t been identified.

In an email sent out by OCC, students were instructed to contact Campus Safety or the Costa Mesa Police Department if they have any information on the incident or the suspect, whose image was captured via security cameras inside the building.

This incident has been classified as a battery by CMPD and a detective is working on the case.

Campus Safety can be reached at 714-432-5017 and the CMPD can be reached at 714-754-5198.
