According to Chief of Campus Safety Jim Rudy, a female student was sleeping in her car in the Merrimac Way Parking Lot when a young man approached her vehicle at approximately 2 p.m. today.
The man reached into her open front window and appeared to try and grab a phone charger only to be startled when the female student noticed him and yelled, causing the suspect to run, according to Rudy.
The female student called the Costa Mesa Police Department to report the incident and Campus Safety officers were the first to respond to the scene.
According to Rudy, Campus Safety officers Tim Winer and Tony Bryant were prompt in their response and the suspect was apprehended before running too far from the scene of the crime. While the suspect didn’t have any stolen property on him, Rudy said that CMPD handcuffed and arrested the man on the witness’ account.
The man could be seen sitting handcuffed in the Merrimac Way Parking Lot at 2:15 p.m.
In light of this incident, Rudy said students should be aware of their surroundings if they want to nap in their car and consider not having a completely open window. He also thanked the CMPD officers for their quick response.
