The Coast Report, Orange Coast College’s student newspaper, was awarded second place in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s statewide general excellence contest over the weekend.
The paper beat out dozens of other publications to earn the award, including finalists Santa Monica College, Contra Costa College and Santa Ana College. City College of San Francisco took the first place plaque.
Additionally, the Coast Report’s former editor Kassidy Dillon also took second place in writing in the statewide contest for her story “Life is a Gamble” about the overdose death of an OCC student and her boyfriend.
The judges cited Dillon’s use of detail and the compelling nature of the story in giving her the award as well as the voices she was able to work into the story.
“This award to the staff and to Kassidy is incredible. The dedication and passion our students show week after week is evident in these awards and they should all be very proud,” said Cathy Werblin, a journalism instructor and faculty adviser to the Coast Report.
